The Hidden Dimension

FractalIf anyone caught the Nova episode last night “Hunting the Hidden Dimension,” they are probably looking at trees, leaves, clouds and mountains in a whole different light today.  The show wonderfully illustrated the history of Fractal Geometry, and much to my interest, how it overlaps with the visual world; even graphic design and animation.  This online demo is an easy way to see how fractals and self-similarity work.  What is really intriguing to me is how this applies to organisms and helps explain how the same basic biological structures can work for every creature from a flea to an elephant.  I am by no means a math wiz, but I thoroughly enjoyed this and have really gained a new understanding of fractals!

How to Create FREE Ringtones for Your iPhone

I have seen a lot of posts about this, but there seems to be a lot of confusion about how to correctly convert one of your .mp3 files into an iPhone ringtone without paying Apple.  I thought I would share what just worked for me in this regard:

NOTE: I am using my iPhone 3G with software version 2.1

  1. Find the mp3 file you want to convert (iTunes/Right-click song/Show in Finder)
  2. Open the mp3 file in Quicktime (you will need Pro)
  3. Use the sliders to select the part you want to loop (supposedly 40 secs. is the max allowed for a ringtone) and choose Edit/Trim to Selection.
  4. Now choose File/Export/Sound as AIFF and save the file somewhere.
  5. Drag the new AIFF file into iTunes to add to your library.
  6. Right-click the song in iTunes and “Convert to AAC”
  7. Right-click the new AAC version and “Show in Finder”
  8. Change the file extension on the new AAC file to be .m4r (click “Use .m4r” in the warning pop-up message)
  9. Now go back to iTunes and right-click/Delete the old AAC file version (choose “Keep file” in the warning pop-up).
  10. Drag the new .m4r version into the Ringtones folder of iTunes.
  11. Now the Ringtone will show up on the Sync list for ringtones when your iPhone is connected!

Good luck, hope it works for you too…
